Watch Tsunami harpoons Japanese whaling town Video Tsunami harpoons Japanese whaling town
Jan 13, 2012
The Japanese whaling town of Ayukawa has survived the wrath of environmental groups for decades, but had no defence against a giant tsunami that wiped out the industry here, possibly for ever. One of only four communities in Japan that have continued to hunt and eat whales in defiance of international opposition, the town was already down to a single operating company, Ayukawa Whaling. The March 11 tsunami that slammed into Japan's northeast coast took most of Ayukawa with it, destroying 80 per cent of houses and leaving 400 of its 1400 residents unaccounted for. The wave shattered Ayukawa Whaling's storage facility and carried its fleet of three whaling ships hundreds of metres inland where they now lie grounded and impotent. Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Mizusawa on Ayukawa's flattened coastline.

Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd says Japanese whalers are ''the real eco-terrorists'' after their vessels clash on the high seas. Whaling in Japan may have begun as early as the 12th century. During the 20th century, Japan was heavily involved in commercial whaling until the International Whaling Commission moratorium on commercial whaling went into effect in 1986. Japan continued to hunt whales using the scientific research provision in the agreement, and Japanese whaling is currently conducted by the Institute of Cetacean Research. The meat from this scientific whale hunts is then sold in shops and restaurants. This is allowed under IWC rules, although most IWC members oppose it. These hunts are a source of conflict between pro- and anti-whaling countries and organizations. Nations, scientists and environmental organizations opposed to whaling consider the Japanese research program to be unnecessary at best and a thinly disguised commercial whaling operation at worst. Japan maintains that annual whaling is sustainable and necessary for scientific study and management of whale stocks. Japan also argues that objections to whaling are based upon cultural differences and emotional anthropomorphism. Presented by www.howdodat.com

Japanese Whaling uses $30 million of the Tsunami relief fund to try and kill more whales in the Antarctic Southern Ocean, which is supposed to be a designated whale sanctuary, according to the IWC (International Wankers Commission). Which century is Greenpeace's John Frizell living in? He also said the whalers left the Southern Ocean early last year with as low as 450 whales. They only reached 17% of their self imposed quota...170 whales. Thanks to the only conservation charity that takes on the criminal poachers where it counts..in the hostile Southern Oceans, and that is Sea Shepherd. I'm glad I stopped my Greenpeace subscription. How much money do you raise to save whales Greenpeace? THANK YOU ALJAZEERA FOR COVERING WHALING AND FOR SHOWING THE ONLY ORGANISATION TAKING ACTION AGAINST THE POACHERS. Thanks also for all the reports you do about environmental issues. You stand out from main stream media. MORE OF THE SAME PLEASE. Tim
